The Chinese Lady

“If only I could have shown you how we are so alike in many beautiful ways. And how we are different in so many beautiful ways as well.” – Afong Moy, The Chinese Lady Award-winning Charlotte company, Three Bone Theatre, is remounting their acclaimed production of Lloyd Suh’s The Chinese Lady at the Cain Center for the Arts. The Chinese Lady and star performances by Amy Wada and Stephen West-Rogers, received rave reviews during its run in August at The Arts Factory. Based on a true story, Suh’s dark and poetic play explores the life of Afong Moy, the first documented Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil. Afong Moy was brought to America in 1834 to be put on display for a paying public who were mesmerized by her differences. For the next half-century, she performed across the Eastern United States for curious white people, showing them how she ate, what she wore, and the highlight of the event; how she walked with her tiny bound feet. Lloyd Suh’s critically-acclaimed play explores an often overlooked and shameful portion of America’s colonial history through the eyes of a young Chinese woman. The Chinese Lady directed by Robin Tynes-Miller, stars Amy Wada and Stephen West-Rogers in this dynamic drama. This show contains adult themes, including trauma to Asians and Asian-Americans, recommended for ages 14+ “…piercing and intimate…this quiet play steadily deepens in complexity as we trail the idealistic Afong and the more knowing Atung through the decades…by the end of Mr. Suh’s extraordinary play, we look at Afong and see whole centuries of American history.”  – New York Times, Critics Pick “You will be rewarded with new insights and an extraordinary pair of performances by both Wada and West-Rogers.” – Queen City Nerve

A Doll’s House, Part 2

Charlotte Conservatory Theatre, the company behind POTUS, returns to the Cain Center for the Arts with its acclaimed Mint Museum production of A Doll’s House, Part 2.In the 1879 debut of Henrik Ibsen’s iconic A Doll’s House, Nora Helmer shocked audiences with her infamous “door slam heard around the world,” a bold decision that terminated her relationships with her husband and children but created space for a budding relationship with herself. Fast forward to 2017 and Lucas Hnath’s Tony-nominated sequel, A Doll’s House, Part 2. Nora is back, knocking on that same door she slammed fifteen years earlier. Now a successful, self-made writer, is Nora prepared to reckon with the family she left in her journey of self discovery? Audiences need not be familiar with the original play to feel gut punched by this bracingly funny and unabashedly contemporary sequel that dives into the aftermath of a courageous act. “No, you will not find the answer to why Nora returns in this review. The best way to find out is to watch how Hnath’s rewarding sequel unfolds…Perhaps the better question to ask, after seeing this beautifully balanced Charlotte Conservatory Theatre production, is whether Nora will ever take yes for an answer.” -QC Nerve“[A] smart, funny and utterly engrossing play…” —The New York Times

POTUS

Horrible bosses make life miserable in a variety of ways, but when the doofus in charge is the President of the United States, the stakes of maintaining workplace sanity are even higher. In Selina Fillinger’s savage, riotous POTUS, a group of unwitting heroines, ranging from the Chief of Staff to the mistress to the First Lady herself, must keep the toxic office culture of the White House from tipping into international disaster. Will they grab a little power for themselves in the process? Directed by Stephen Kaliski with an all-star cast of Charlotte actors, POTUS skewers the proud American tradition of feckless male leadership while also hinting at a better way forward. The recent Broadway premiere starred Vanessa Williams, Lea DeLaria, and Rachel Dratch. Critics called it “a delicious feminist farce” (Variety) and “a breath of fresh air on Broadway…The likelihood that you will laugh until your face hurts is one of near certainty.” (Entertainment Weekly). It closed in August 2022, making this Charlotte staging one of the first regional productions.  This new cast includes Jennifer Adams, Marla Brown, Iris DeWitt, Sarah Molloy, Iesha Nyree, Katy Shepherd, and Valerie Thames. The show will be designed by Chip Davis (scenic), Ashleigh Poteat (costumes), Gordon Olson (lighting), and Matt Sherwin (sound and compositions), with Allison Collins and Sarah Provencal as fight and intimacy choreographers. Carrie Cranford will serve as production manager, and Kathryn Harding will stage manage. Savannah Deal and Marla Brown are the producers.
