Colored Pencil: Still Life with a Fall FocusCain Center for the Arts: Classroom 115 Oct. 30 – Dec. 11, 2025 Price: $175.00 Thursday, 4:30pm – 6:00pm Instructor: Lisa Albinus Course Description: Celebrate the colors and textures of the season while strengthening your drawing skills in this six-week colored pencil class. Using seasonal subjects, students will learn how to capture light, shadow, and form through composition, layering, shading, and color blending. Each week builds on essential techniques — from planning strong compositions and mapping shadows, to turning form and creating surface textures with color. Students will work from both live models and photo references, gaining confidence in observation, design, and colored pencil techniques. Prior experience is not necessary. Students who are new will be supported with handouts and practice exercises to get them up to speed, while continuing students will have opportunities to deepen their skills. We will begin by reviewing composition and shading. Weeks three and four will be an intro in portraits and figures using charcoal. The final two weeks will introduce the use of ink. With ink we will work on perspective drawing using lines and architecture. This three-day workshop is perfect for intermediate to advanced wheel throwing students who are ready to take their work to the next level. Each class, the instructor will have one or two challenges for the students to complete – whether it’s throwing numerous pots within a given time limit, or throwing one handed with another student! These challenges are designed to test and expand your skills while having fun at the same time. Due to the nature of the workshop, finishing and glazing your class projects will need to be completed during paid open studio hours. Pre-req: Students must have completed at least 4-5 wheel throwing classes at the Cain Center in order to register. PLEASE READ: Given our upcoming move out of the Oak Street Mill location and the subsequent abbreviated ceramic session, registration does not guarantee firing for all pieces created in class. The final product will be glazed or painted with underglazes. If students have their own pottery tools, they are welcome to bring them, but it is not required. This class will be great for beginner to intermediate acrylic or oil painters. Intermediate watercolorists are also welcome! Each class will start with a discussion on a practical topic such as design, composition, color mixing, mark making techniques, etc. followed by a short demo. There will be up to three different inspirations for paintings, and students will work on creating a landscape, a floral or still life, and a figure painting throughout the Summer B session.
