CAIN CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW EXHIBIT:
GENERATIONS - HIGHLIGHTING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, CULTURES, & ARTWORK

November 12, 2024 – January 11, 2025

Cain Center for the Arts is proud to present Generations: Highlighting Indigenous Peoples, Cultures, & Artwork, a special exhibit running from November 12, 2024, through January 11, 2025. This vibrant exhibit offers an extraordinary exploration of the art and culture of Indigenous Peoples, showcasing historical, traditional, and contemporary works from artists of Catawba Nation, Melungeon Heritage, the CHamoru Diaspora, Cherokee, Gullah, Lumbee, and more.

Visitors will experience an inspiring collection of visual arts that reflect the richness and diversity of Indigenous cultural legacies and their evolving narratives. Special thanks to our partners the Melungeon Heritage Association, Catawba Cultural Center, and Brooke Gibbons for their critical support of this project. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, is available for viewing Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Duality: A Collection of Afro Indigenous Perspectives
Cain Center is excited to present a screening of Duality: A Collection of Afro Indigenous Perspectives, a groundbreaking film by award-winning filmmakers Kimberly M. Night (Black Indians NC) and Frederick D. Murphy (History Before Us). This thought-provoking documentary delves into the intersectionality of Indigenous and African American identities in the United States. With rave reviews for its cultural insights and historical relevance, Duality offers a deep look at the shared experiences of these communities.

GENERATIONS CELEBRATIONS: JANUARY 10-11, 2025

To culminate this inspiring exhibit, Cain Center is planning special celebrations on the closing weekend of January 10-11, 2025.

Friday highlights include free performances from CHamoru dance troupe Hale Para Agupa, Catawba Men’s Drum Group and a featured concert from well-known NC Native Indigenous artist Charly Lowry:

Charly Lowry stands as a soulful powerhouse in the realm of music, effortlessly enchanting audiences with her velvety vocals, heartfelt compositions, and commanding stage presence. Seamlessly traversing musical boundaries, Charly masterfully blends elements of Americana, folk, rock, blues, and soul into a rich and evocative tapestry of sound. This NC Native garnered national attention after earning a Golden Ticket on American Idol. Tickets available to the public will be available on November 11 here.

Saturday highlights include a spoken word performance from Latonya Betty, a fashion exhibition from maker Beverly Scarlett and a special panel discussion with our partners at the Melungeon Heritage Association, Catawba Cultural Center, and representatives of the indigenous Pasifika diaspora. Saturday events will be held at Cain Center for the Arts from 11AM-2PM and are free and open to the public. Full detailed schedule will be announced soon.

This exhibit and its accompanying events aim to honor the creativity, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, while sparking meaningful dialogue and appreciation in the local community.
