SENTENCED: A CALL-TO-ACTION DOCUMENTARY

PRESENTED BY ADA JENKINS CENTER IN COLLABORATION WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS

“Sentenced”, documentary film by Stephen & Ayesha Curry: Rewrite Futures Through Reading-A Call To Action for Childhood Literacy by Ada Jenkins Center

Join us on Friday, July 25th at 6:00PM for this special free event, offered in collaboration between Ada Jenkins Center, Eat.Learn.Play., Children’s Literacy Project, and Cain Center for the Arts

The documentary delves into the personal and harsh realities of intergenerational illiteracy, showcasing the impact on families and communities. It features stories told by those who never learned how to read. The documentary aims to raise awareness about the issue of childhood illiteracy and its impact on children and families. The event will offer a way for viewers to get involved in addressing this problem locally through Ada Jenkins Center’s LEARN Works Program.

A reception with hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to connect with LEARN Works representatives will be held right after the viewing of the documentary.

Note: Due to mature content, this event is not suitable for children. Supervised activities for K–5th grade students will be available through LEARN Works at the Cain Center for the Arts. Registration is required and space is limited. Please register now to secure a spot for your child!

THANK YOU TO ALL KEY PARTNERS:

Ada Jenkins Center exists to help people in our community create lasting solutions for economic stability.

For over 25 years, the LEARN Works Afterschool Academic & Enrichment Program, the only free program of its kind in northern Mecklenburg County, has helped elementary students who are 1-2 grade levels behind in reading. To continue students' growth, the LEARN Works Program's Camp LEARN Works provides a free 3-week summer experience focused on skill refreshment and preparing students for the upcoming school year.
Eat. Learn. Play. was founded in 2019 by Stephen and Ayesha Curry with the belief that every kid deserves more and should be given the opportunity and support to reach their full potential. That’s why they’re on an indelible mission to uplift an entire generation of youth. Within the Oakland Unified School District, they support children’s wellbeing through access to nutritious meals, quality reading resources, and opportunities to play and be active.
At the Children’s Literacy Project, they believe solving America’s literacy crisis starts at the community level. By equipping local leaders, volunteers, and organizations with the tools they need, they are activating a nationwide movement to ensure every child has the opportunity to become a confident reader.
